Deception Island is a live caldera, it last went up in 1972. The Argentians are also doing light science on the other side of the bay. The result of having a volcano underneath the bay is that the sand is steaming hot, in places and it's possible to swim within a small area. Still cold when you get out though hence fluffy towels awaiting those that were brave enough
The Polar Star, built for the Swedish Navy by the Finns as a Baltic icebreaker, is now owned by a Canadian company. Lots of references in Google. A 6000 horsepower diesel electric machine with screws at both ends. Hands on direct control from the bridge (which is open to all) so Captain Oscar drives directly from those fine brass telegraph machines using both hands. A fine and friendly crew. Expedition staff who worked hard to show us stuff. Thanks to all of them.
